The vibrant and cosmopolitan offerings of Melbourne attract millions of visitors every year and it is a bustling city full of soul and culture.

Melbourne has evolved into a hugely dynamic city that breathes a breath fresh air into the lungs of its many visitors. As such, many events are regularly held in the city and they vary from sports events to cultural festivals and everything in between.

Melbourne events produce a year-round hectic calendar for they city’s guests and the Formula One Australian Grand Prix is one of the highlights of the Melbourne sporting diary. The already animated city comes alive all over again with the deep growl of engines on the Albert Park circuit in what is the opening race of the FIA World Championship in March.

For those looking for a quieter sporting event, the Australian Open Tennis Championships is held every January at Melbourne Park and in a similar fashion to the GP, it kicks off the start of the Grand Slam tournaments. Melbourne is also known for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival which brings to the stage hundreds of the funniest comedians in the country and around the world.

Free events are often held throughout Melbourne, with local art displays and charity events on offer at various locations. Melbourne International Arts Festival, held for two weeks in mid-October, is a large exhibition of music, theatre, dance and opera that is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

Those with green fingers can take a trip to the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in Carlton Gardens in late March. Here more than 300 exhibitors proudly display gardens full of a whopping 10,000 flowers that attract thousands of people with their clever use of colour, arrangements and presentations.

New Year’s Eve in Melbourne is a lively affair as the countdown to midnight welcomes with it a host of firework displays, parties and live bands.
