Vibrant Melbourne is best experienced within its Central Business District, often referred to simply as CBD. There is an abundance of things to see and do here as the district is not solely designed to accommodate business people, with tourists being just as common in this bustling and lively area of one of the country’s most interesting cities.
Flinders Street is home to Flinders Street Station, perfect for getting out and about throughout the rest of the city. Melbourne Aquarium is also found here, which houses thousands of exotic marine species and makes for a perfect setting to entertain restless children.
In addition, many of the most important and pertinent landmarks of the city can be enjoyed in the CBD, with the State Library, National Gallery, Royal Botanical Gardens and its amazing collection of plants and Federation Square all located here.
Known as the heart of the transportation offerings in Melbourne, the Central Business District is easy to get around, with taxi termini, trams, bicycle trails and train stations all contributing.
Ferries dock at nearby Federation Wharf and a water taxi service runs to other areas of the city from here making for a cheap and fun way to explore the sights. Trams play an important role in the smooth running of the city and run until late at night, with extended services on offer at the weekends.
Melbourne CBD is home to a choice of hotels that are aimed at a high-end market with a few mid-range choices thrown in for the more budget conscious. Regardless of the star-rating of your hotel you will enjoy great access to the city’s most popular attractions.
Restaurants and bars serve up tasty food throughout the day and night to rushed office workers and mingling tourists but if you are looking for a quiet café then the side streets off the main roads are beset with early morning coffee aromas.
CBD shopping can be enjoyed in any one of the many malls including the well-equipped Bourke Street Mall. A CBD map can be obtained by curious visitors either online or at one of the many tourist information centres.
